Is 3D TV for real? The short answer is yes, but there are many things to consider.

There is a lot of hype around 3D TV coming from the major TV manufacturers. But is it for real? As usual there are many new things to think about.

Call us today or read on for more information.

3D Basics:

3D content is filmed using a special camera that has two cameras and lenses that are roughly the same distance apart as your eyes. Then the two images are alternately displayed on a 3D TV to make up each frame. By wearing special glasses that are synced to the TV (an active system) or glasses that are polarized differently (passive system), the left eye only sees the left image and right eye only sees the right image. These are either active glasses that talk wirelessly to the TV, or stylish passive glasses, not the cheap, ugly cardboard red/blue glasses from the past. Some companies are touting glasses-free 3D TV, but they are not currently very available.

3D Content:

You can find 3D content on Blu-ray Discs or on DirecTV Satellite. There are many new titles available on Blu-ray and this is a priority for the movie studios so more movies are coming shortly. DirecTV has 4 channels that are broadcasting in 3D right now.

Blu-Ray Player:

You will have to have a newer Blu-ray that supports at least HDMI 1.4 and the 3D standard in order to watch 3D Blu-rays. Some current Blu-ray players will need to be replaced while some may just need a firmware update from the manufacturer usually done over the Internet.

Surround Receiver:

If you are using your Surround Processor or Receiver to switch your video signals, then it will also have to support at least HDMI 1.4 or else you will have to connect your Blu-ray or DirecTV receiver directly to your TV. So even if you bought a new receiver over the last few years, it may not support 3D and HDMI 1.4.

3D TVs:

Currently, most manufacturers LCD/LED and Plasma TVs support 3D. Some will convert 2D content to 3D. So you can watch your favorite movie, TV show or sporting event in 3D! Although it is not as impressive as native 3D content, it is still a great effect. There are many projectors available today that support 3D also.
