What is Green?

Here is a definition I found elsewhere on the Internet:

A sustainable building, or green building is an outcome of a design which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use — energy, water, and materials — while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's life-cycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal.

Automation can enhance all of these things!

Green Technologies

There are many things that Technology can do for a green home:

  • Lighting Control-- By simply dimming lights, you can use a lot less electricity while extending the life of the bulb dramatically. Also, turning lights on and off using smart controllers can save money and increase security. Finally, motion sensors can be used to turn lights off if no motion is detected in a room for say 10 minutes. See Lighting Control for more information.
  • Lighting Options--With dimming, standard incandescent lighting can be made more efficient. But newer bulbs like Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) can save even more energy and money. The problem with CFLs and LEDs are that they have been more expensive and not easy to dim. Some people have complained the they don't like the "color" of CFL or LED lighting. All of these issues have been fixed as manufacturers gain more experience and higher volumes to bring the price down.
  • HVAC Control-- Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is another huge area where technology can help. By automatically turning down the heat at night or when you leave the house, an automation system can save you big dollars on your heating and air conditioning costs. See HVAC Control for more information.
  • Saving Water--Using an automation system to do simple things like adjusting the sprinkler system to not water your lawn when it is raining or water less if the temperature is low can save hundreds of gallons of water per week.
  • Electronics-- Did you know that many flat panel TVs draw over half as much current when they are off as when they are on? This doesn't make sense but it is true. By selecting electronics for your home carefully, the overall impact can be lowered substantially.
  • Power Monitoring-- So you have done all of the above. How do you know if it has helped? By integrating power monitoring in to your automation system you can tell instantly how much electricity you are using currently, or over the last day, week or month. So just by turning off some lights or appliances you can tell how much electricity and money you are saving. See Energy Management for more information.
  • Control-- Since you can control the system from anywhere in your home, or outside your home, efficiency can be dramatically increased. So you head off to work and you think you have left some lights on in your home and you forgot to turn down the HVAC system. No problem.. Just log in to your home over the Internet using your smart phone or computer and adjust the heat and turn off the lights!
  • Central Vacuum-- Installing a Central Vacuum system will help your Green Home by taking all of the dirt and pollen out of your home and venting it outside where it belongs! See the Central Vacuum section for more information.
